Summary/Abstract: The study is aimed at drawing attention to the usefulness of, generally insufficiently appreciated, qualitative methods in the diagnosis and practice of speech therapy. The author makes an attempt to present the assumptions of these methods and to justify theiruse – both in the diagnosis and broadly understood practice of speech therapy. The object selected for examination through qualitative methods were the children aged 3 – 10 diagnosed with multiple disability. These children require not only the in-depth recognition of their developmental stage and the needs resulting from their different limitations but they also need constant, complex and multi-specialist speech therapy support and fully integrated rehabilitation care. These are usually parents and the collaborating specialists (including teachers, speech therapists and specialists in neurologopedics, other rehabilitation specialists) who are made responsible for the quality of this care. What becomes the basis for undertaking speech therapy is an appropriately specified diagnosis, which states the condition and needs of children with developmental deficits (with complicated clinical image of developmental defects and disorders) and necessitates the choice of appropriate diagnostic methods, strategies of conduct and research tools. The reflections upon qualitative methods and their justified applicability in diagnostic and rehabilitation procedure are completed with some legibly and concisely formulated conclusions. The author addresses mostly young, less experienced speech therapists and neurologopedics specialists, with whom she wants to share her remarks and experiences.
