Summary/Abstract: Special education and the disability studies combines similar object of scientific inquiry, but their theory and methodology should not be identified. Special education is the subdiscipline of the edu cational sciences, growing over the past 250 years – first in the dimension of educational practice and next also as a scientific discipline based on the methodological assumptions of both the natural sciences (especially medicine), as well as humanities and social sciences. Disability studies are a kind of extension of the research projects from the second half of the twentieth century, including the analysis of the situation of social groups subjected to oppression. Disability as a social phenomenon involves the interpretative research paradigm. It can be assumed that the qualitative model of research in special education has been recognized under the influence of scientific achievements of the disability studies.
