Summary/Abstract: The main objective of this article is to provide empirical verification of the extent to which the relational character of the family business, consisting of two dimensions – the identity of the family business and the relationship between the family and employees – shapes the level of professionalization of the management of a family business. Using data obtained from 149 Polish family firms authors confirmed a hypothesized relationship between the identity of the family business and its professionalization. The hypothesized relationship between the bonds of family–workers with dimensions of professionalization was not confirmed. Finally, theoretical and practical implications as well as limitations and directions for future research are outlined.
