Summary/Abstract: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two approaches to teaching vocabulary. The first was teaching vocabulary by means of maintenance rehearsal while the other method involved exercises. The data were obtained from 51 primary school students in Çanakkale. Two groups of students were formed to constitute control group and experimental group. The control group was given word definitions only while experimental group was given word definitions and instructed to do some vocabulary exercises during four weeks. Results from first pre-test, given to determine students’ knowledge of new words, did not reveal any significant differences between groups. But in post-test there was a significant difference between the control and experimental groups in favour of experimental group (p 500). The findings in this study indicate that learning vocabulary through exercises is more effective than simple repetition of the words.
