Summary/Abstract: Ştefan Bălan was born in January 1st 1913 in the family of Gheorghe Bălan, magistrate and Chiriachiţa Bălan. In 1930 he graduated Nicolae Bălcescu high school (from Brăila). After this he followed the Constructions Faculty within the Polytechnics University of Bucharest which he graduated in 1936. He worked as an assistant at University at the theoretical mechanics department. In the following years he became professor and Head of Department. In 1945 got its PhD with a thesis regarding Contributions to the buckling beams subjected to transverse vibrations within the Polytechnics University. Except university didactic activity Ştefan Bălan was also interested in theoretical and applied research in the field of constructions. During his life he was also interested in practical issues in the field of constructions as a designing engineer, executants and coordinator.
