Summary/Abstract: The place of literature in foreign language teaching has always been limited. Many teachers either do not know how to use literary texts in foreign language classes or are not willing to use them, arguing that literature has little to offer in language learning because of its syntactic, lexical and communicative constraints. However, in this paper it is argued that literature not only represents authentic language, which is the ultimate goal of foreign language teaching, but it can also be incorporated into language classes to develop learners’ intercultural and grammatical competence at the same time. The paper provides a sample lesson plan with suggestions for designing activities fostering learners’ intercultural and grammatical competence.
