Russian idioms and their english semantic counterparts in translation

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on selected groups of idiomatic expressions in Russian and their English semantic interpretations as presented in C. И. Лубенская: Большой русско-анг- лийский фразелогический словарь. Москва: ACT-ПРЕСС КНИГА 2004. The criteria of selection of idioms are partially based on a cultural aspect of an idiomatic expression, which is important to the successful interpretation of the idiom, as far as it is integrated into the accompanying context. The idiom, in contrast to a novel metaphor, does not exhibit the same independence of semantic limits. It must be tied into the surrounding context, which not only syntactically completes the idiom, but also provides the semantic point of reference for it. This feature is very important for the degree of compatibility in the process of translation, where phraseological syntax and pragmatic force have a crucial impact on rules of selection and a final decision of the usage of the target idiom by a translator.
