Summary/Abstract: This text is about Europe. What it was throughout modernity, its organization in sovereign states and the planetary projection its power allowed it to assume. It is also about its two civil wars of the last century, two World Wars, that thoroughly exhausted its power base, throwing the continent into a structural crisis of such a magnitude that left it at the mercy of the two super-powers that emerged to its right and left, the United States and the Soviet Union. It is also about the proposals of political reconfiguration of the continent developed with a view towards its reconstruction and emancipation. Finally, it is about Europe’s continued failure to abandon the spell of state sovereignty and the multiple challenges it now faces, including, domestically, disintegration, and internationally, the specter of irrelevance.
