Summary/Abstract: Upon looking at ourselves, and around us, we are forced to recognise the social and political environment in which our lives are situated or even to have a modicum sense of it, data that imposes upon ourselves and our daily lives in an apparently chaotic manner. In this brave new world, the traditional categories that we inherited from modernity commonly appear to have become outright useless. In contemporary life pilot of an airbus would be like the charts and navigational instruments with which Vasco da Gama opened the maritime route to India and Magellan first circumvented the globe. As a result, we are left with the feeling of being somewhat stranded between two worlds. An Old World, we know well, organised around simple, clear and familiar categories, and a present one, that we are compelled to understand – let alone a future which we hope will possess meaning and value, for ourselves as well as for the future generations.
