Summary/Abstract: Critical theory is particularly rich intellectual tradition, which in spite of its alternative status, left a deep impact in humanistic sciences, especially in sociology, philosophy and mass communication theory. Because of its Marxist background, critical orientation and unconventional methodology, the main thesis of the critical theory about media, communication and society with emancipative and transformative premises never become a part of the mainstream research tradition. In the perspective of its central idea about consciousness industry and high culture as its counterpart, this paper aims to track its development and influence on structuralism and British cultural studies, and to point out the possibilities for the future of critical theory in the context of the present day media technologies.
