Summary/Abstract: The answer to the question of "What is the dictionary and how was it born?" has been discussed up to now in lots of papers. In this study, the same question is discussed from a historical aspect and afterwards the initiator of Japanese education in Turkey and the dictionaries written in Japanese-Turkish and Turkish-Japanese are handled. When these dictionaries are evaluated, it can be said for the dictionaries which have still publications in Turkey that they either have a very limited vocabulary or are really lack of answering the needs of their users for most of them are designed as a pocket dictionary. By the widespread use of the internet in the recent years, the corpus databases developed both in Japanese and Turkish have become available for any user who wants to reach them. By introducing some of these databases in this study, it is expected to shed a light on how to create Japanese-Turkish and Turkish-Japanese avant-garde dictionaries.
