An Analysis on Turkish Students’ Errors in Written Chinese

Summary/Abstract: The Chinese character is one of the most long-lived writing systems that carries the Chinese cultural heritage, historical background and literary works together. Thus, it can be regarded as a subject being researched by people from different fields. Chinese characters has a long history, but it has not started in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language until the ‘90s. The studies in literature can be summarized into two main groups: the “Chinese Literary Culture” and the “Alphabetical Languages”. Our aim is to analyze the common errors on forms made by Turkish students while writing in Chinese in the country which is out of the influence by Chinese literary culture. In the current study, the exam papers and homework gathered from the students with a mother tongue of Turkish are analyzed. The data are collected though 2011 and 2012. An error analysis is made according to character components, character strokes and word errors in detail.
