Summary/Abstract: This text presents the results of a survey which aimed to determine how comprehensible the language used by Czech police officers is to people who do not have any direct connection with policing. The data is evaluated in terms of the age and education of respondents; it also takes into account respondents’ answers when questioned on the source of their knowledge of the police sociolect. The article also explores the general public’s opinions on the function of the language used by police officers.
