Cultural Diversity in Modern Europe: The Significance of Cultural Studies

Summary/Abstract: I concentrate on possible future roles of Cultural Studies and the humanities in the twenty-first century European cultural diversity. I stress the importance of Cultural Studies mainly in that it helps us to get to know other cultures and cultural traditions, and thus, this discipline may enhance cross-cultural cooperation so important in today´s globalized Europe. The twenty first century will probably be moving towards a multicultural and multi-ethnic society for which intercultural understanding, cross-cultural communication and dialogue will be a must, absolutely necessary for its survival. Hence, the humanities and Cultural Studies may become a catalyst which reduces, or even eliminates, fierce nationalism, racism and xenophobia in the modern world.
