DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED IN SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION: RENDERING A NARRATIVE DISCOURSE

Summary/Abstract: This work consists in highlighting the difficulties faced when simultaneously interpreting from French into Romanian; the difficulties have been identified upon analyzing the rendition of a narrative speech in the target language. Two interpretations of the same speech performed by the same interpreter at different times have been analyzed. In order to analyze the interpreter’s performance, we have had in mind several techniques that are considered specific to the simultaneous interpretation out of which we have selected those that were frequently met in the two renditions: syntactic calque and rephrasing. Moreover, we preferred analyzing two renditions of the same speech performed by the same interpreter in order to see whether having a first contact with the topic helps the interpreter improve his performance and the quality of the speech in the target language.
