Summary/Abstract: This academic essay traces the evolution of the technology of making children’s books, and focuses on the example of Beatrix Potter’s success story. The author argues that the form in which authors’ works reach their readers is the result of activities of persons beyond the solitary figure crouched over the writing-desk or the keyboard. The essay was included in The Cambridge Companion to Children’s Literature (2009).
