Summary/Abstract: As its front-line representatives classics publicly define the genre – but how does the genre define its classics? The author tries to answer the question by tracing the history of critical assessment and discussing the role of academics, librarians, children, and their parents in creating the canon of children’s literature. The essay was included in The Cambridge Companion to Children’s Literature (2009).
