Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the translation from Latin of the summary of the Old Testament, which was published in 1823, in Vilnius. The translation of Simonas Stanevièius (1799-1848) was one of the first attempts to present the history of the Bible to the readers of Lithuania Major. Ideas of fostering the modern written language were influencing the translator, who was attempting to make the written language more modern. The article tells the history of the source-book, L'homond's Epitome Historiae Sacrae, and the reasons for choosing this for translation. A textual analysis is presented and the source of the translation has been ascertained. The source-book was published by Liudvikas Sobolevskis in 1811, in Vilnius. Further, the linguistic translation analysis method is applied and a detailed analysis of Stanevièius translation is presented.
