Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the matter of counter-urbanisation and its relation to quality of life as a topic for the further research which should be carried out in Poland due to the gaps in existing knowledge. The understanding of the concept of counter-urbanisation was outlined and a broad overview of recent international literature concerning the subject was presented in the first part of the article. A special attention was paid to the works which indicate the need for research in Central and Eastern Europe. In the further part, the different motives for migration to peripheral rural areas, especially in the context of relation between counter-urbanisation processes and quality of life, were analysed. The focus was put on both positive (migration to rural areas motivated by the desire to improve the quality of life) and negative (migration to rural areas motivated by lower cost of living or by the obligation to take care of close relatives) factors. In the final part of the article, the authors propose a number of research questions concerning Polish context of the subject which should be a matter of an interdisciplinary study involving geography, sociology and other social sciences.
