Summary/Abstract: The article examines the role of Lithuanian gymnasia, its mission, and prospects based on the view of various educational experts. Many state and local administration educational specialists and researchers agree on a universal gymnasium system, which would strive for equality and access to learning opportunities among students, however, while realizing the universal system, one can't help but notice certain gymnasium separation, elitism, and orientation towards the more gifted students, who are sometimes originating from a higher social class status. Experts think that it's necessary to address the different abilities of individual students. A number of educational specialists also recognize high schools' structural diversity, However, the four year Lithuanian gymnasium model is still most agreed upon, even though the specialists are also open to searching for new educational system types. The vast differences in opinions on the direction of modern gymnasia, the formation of their students and teachers, their contingency formation, and the education process have revealed a disagreement on the new gymnasium formation among the profes-sionals (educational leaders, specialists, and researchers). Questions on the realization of stable gymnasia and the upbringing of the gifted have revealed ex-isting gaps in the educational policy for reasons of needed changes in documents and their weak dissemination, public relation policy, competition between experts themselves, preparation differences and gaps, unfamiliarity with the newest educational studies and research, indecision as well as lack of strategic plan-ning, leadership experience, and practice. The differences in views between educational specialists who are responsible for the wellbeing of gymnasia display the lack of conceptual understanding of a common gymnasium as a whole and its goal achievements. Similarly, the unsolved problem concerning the direc-tion and realization of new gymnasia on state and local levels persists.
