Summary/Abstract: Permanent contact with Internet resources affects an individual’s awareness as far as projection of the future and the way of his or her own development is concerned. As a result, the individual has a sense of personal vagueness. The influence of new media on the course of this process is currently considered as dominant, in particular within the period of intensive personality formation, which means childhood. In this period, contacts with significant people play an important role for the individual. Nowadays, in the face of weakening of social structures by modern tendencies, the role of significant people is being effectively taken over by new media. Environment of the new media, unfortunately, pushes reality into the background and becomes a natural environment for children. Under its influence, a new type of personality is developed – media personality. An individual with media personality is not able to choose consciously among many options offered by the media. As a consequence, it becomes more and more difficult for them to develop a sense of self-awareness, which is necessary to develop subjectivity. Bearing in mind historical and current vision of media education, this article attempts at characterizing the role that should be played by education in the process of development of a stable personality structure. This process is called media socialization. Such a perspective of socializing by means of media education in the future involves the need to combine its three classic fields of action: teaching about media, teaching through media and teaching for media. In this way, one consistent field is created – teaching towards media – which means a set of education practices that eliminate results of disturbances caused by early contacts with the new media.
