Summary/Abstract: Starting from Irina Mavrodin’s theory that, as far as the avant-garde poetry is concerned, literary translation coincides with literal translation, we aim at analysing a series of examples from B. Fundoianu’s and Ilarie Voronca’s works in order to put Mavrodin’s translation method to the test. We will rely on extracts from Fundoianu’s Priveliști/Paysages (translated by Odile Serre) and Priveliști/Landscapes (translated by Dan Solomon), as well as Voronca’s Ulise/Ulysse dans la cité (translated by Roger Vailland in cooperation with the author). We will also look into Roger Vailland’s role in the process of translation, given the fact that he did not speak Romanian. Furthermore, we will try to prove that it was the inner language of socially-oriented poetry that led Voronca to self-translation.
