Summary/Abstract: This article puts forward an analysis on the origins of the Islamic radical ideologies, arguing for the existence of intellectual and political differences among the nationalist, salafist jihadism, the jihadism of the „balance of power” between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and the postmodern jihadism of Al Qaeda. The evaluation of these three ideologies describes among the causes of their emergence, the evolutions of the post-colonial Arab state, the failure of panarabism and the competition for influence in the Middle East. Moreover, the article analyses the relationships between political regimes and radical movements and the construction of the jihadist discourse based on conceptual imports from European ideologies and on the incorporation of the anti-imperialism theses.
