Summary/Abstract: The present study is articulated as a comparative analysis in the field ofdetective fiction, in two representative cases, namely those of Edgar Allan Poe’s ThePurloined Letter and Henry James’s The Figure in the Carpet, performing as indicatives ofa common privative and reversative nuance in the associated processes of detextualizationand detection. The term resulted by attaching the prefix de-to the notion of fault performsas a hermeneutical and structural instrument through three complementary acceptations, namely absence, excess, and neutrality, which encourage a reconsideration of the negativeconnotations of error, a de-faulting approach of error as a requisite in creating, interpreting, and understanding.
