Summary/Abstract: The aim of the research is the discourse-analysis of New Year addresses of Ukrainian presidents from 1991 till 2014. The subject of the study is based on the New Year video greetings of the Ukrainian presidents. The videos of New Year appeals made by the presidents of Russia and the USSR leaders were also used in compara-tive analysis. The article deals with the following hypothesis: using the appropriate communicative strategies and non-verbal performance the president is trying to establish the boundaries of his own understanding of the nation and lays particular political vector for the years to come. In the analysis together with the language aspect (verbal analysis), the non-verbal characteristics in the con-text with visual images are also taken into account. It is the principle of the interaction of these characters, and the relevance of verbal and nonverbal characteristics that determines the basis of methodological analysis. On the basis of the study, the author came to the conclusion that the transformations taking place in the po-litical arena of the countries, that once were one and the same country, are quite similar, but at the same time, due to the different mentalities and structures by which a person identifies himself with the community they can be interpreted differently. Solely in those moments when Ukraine was taking a pro-Russian policy vector the level of self-identification in Ukrainian presidential greeting texts was also transforming, namely, the further away from the Eurasian mentality, the higher the level of human values is at the core of the nation, at the core of state. The present analysis of New Year‘s greetings very clearly traces the fluctuations of national identity in a wider sense ―power – people (people) / person (people) – Power‖, where the primary roles are changed, de-pending on the political situation in the country.
