Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt at reconstructing the elements of the linguistic image of the world preserved in fixed compounds containing the lexeme bieda (poverty), whose imagery is based on depicting a multitude of unfavorable phenomena. The multiplication process serves the function of, above all, hyperbolization, as well as strengthening expressiveness and the persuasive power of proverbs. They reflect a particular fatalism, preserved in the folk image of the world, which is based on the conviction that a difficult situation of man does not usually occur in isolation, but rather creates a bundle of unfavourable, mutually complicating circumstances.
