Summary/Abstract: The Western and the Russian press turned a cold shoulder to and was sceptical about the result of Poland’s presidential elections in October 2005. The author of the present essay is reviewing the main developments which defined the perceptions of the Polish voters, in order to explain something that is hard to accept in Europe, which shows little understanding to the traumas of post-communist transition – namely, that the transformation of Poland from a communist country, with a command economy and a more or less homogeneous society, into a more or less chaotic democracy and into a society marked by social inequalities, was not done without important costs at the level of social cohesion.
