Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the twentieth century, the coal industry became the most important regional employer in the Lower and later also in the Middle Lusatia. After the Second World War, the government of the GDR continued those traditions. Major projects were implemented, like the coal combine of Čorna Pumpa (1955-66), the great power plants Lubnjow (1957-1964), Wětošow (1960-1967). In addition, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the New Town Wojerecy (1955). In the combine Čorna Pumpa and in the New Town Wojerecy, the Sorbian language and culture was intended to be cultivated. In the socialist city Wojerecy, a great Sorbian cultural complex was planned to be built. Wojerecy declared itself as the new Sorbian capital. Those plans were not realized. Nevertheless, the Sorbian Museum was the only institution that functioned there for some time. The city did not develop in the direction of a new bilingual center. Wojerecy as a new Sorbiancapital turned out to be an illusion.
