Summary/Abstract: A plethora of publications and conferences devoted to autonomy – both its theoretical and empirical facets – government guidelines, strategic training elements integrated in textbooks and apparently numerous supporters of autonomy, not only among teachers and students, certainly favor further fostering of self-reliance in learners. A question arises, however, regarding the extent to which learners are willing and able to be autonomous, especially in view of the fact that autonomy as such has been present in foreign language teaching for quite some time now. The article seeks to answer this question, based on creative writing samples produced by Polish-German student tandems, with a particular focus on social strategies employed by the students.
