Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyse active listening and its role in developing learners' independence. The starting point for discussion is the assumption that active listening, understood as acceptance of learners, a way of encouraging them to express their thoughts, feelings and opinions, helps the development of their thinking skills, independence in decision-making as well as educational autonomy. Therefore, later in this article the techniques of active listening, such as explaining, paraphrasing, reflecting on feelings and emotions, and summarising, will be discussed. At the same time, attention will be drawn to communication mistakes made by teachers that lead to students’ discouragement and prevent them from developing autonomy. Finally, the article will present the results of a survey conducted among teachers. The pilot study had two objectives, i.e. to determine whether teachers have the ability to actively listen and whether they apply this ability in practice.
