Summary/Abstract: Exclusion is a negative phenomenon, as it significantly contributes to social differentiation. Educational exclusion is one of many areas of social exclusion. It describes inequalities in access to education as well as a variety of mechanisms causing these inequalities. Today, education is regarded as one of the ways to achieve a more harmonious and authentic development of people, and its primary aims include eradication of poverty and social exclusion. Being one of the essential determinants of professional career and an indicator of one’s socio-economic position, education is widely regarded as a kind of investment. This article attempts to distinguish factors which contribute to exclusion and factors which deepen this phenomenon. It also presents the expectations of society and educational activities undertaken in Poland for children and youth at risk of social exclusion.
