Summary/Abstract: The paper investigates order of proper particles in relation to non-compound prepositions. Primarily, most particles precede prepositions, it is however possible for them to occur in postposition. Following Jadwiga Wajszczuk (2010), the author subsumes particles under paratactemes, and claims that the position a particle opens is neither semantically nor grammatically restricted. The paper provides evidence that the position opened by a particle is filled by a prepositional noun phrase or its component, but not by a preposition on its own. A preposition – a dependent predicate – must be considered together with its two-sided surroundings. A preposition neither receives non-contrastive sentence stress, nor functions as the sentence’s rheme. The observations presented in the article lead the author to concluding that the definition of a paratacteme needs amendments, since the position opened by a paratacteme is grammatically restricted.
