INNOVATIVENESS OF VIDEO GAME DEVELOPERS

Summary/Abstract: Creative industries, and game industry in particular, do attract greater and greater attention of investors, politicians and scholars. Among current field of scientific research there is innovativeness reached and developed by companies operating within the game industry as it has been acknowledged as a critical success factor at the global scale. Based on the critical review of prior academic literature and industry reports we were able to identify some important knowledge gaps and to exclude substantial shortcomings in the existing studies. Having these gaps and drawbacks in our mind we decided to conduct exploratory field research aimed at answering three research questions related to perception and opinions about multidimensional nature of innovativeness expressed by game developers operating within Polish video game industry. Our research results suggest that: innovativeness covers both creation and implementation of original ideas; innovativeness must cross organizational borders, innovativeness is multidimensional in nature while three out of four considered dimensions seem to play important role. Furthermore, in the light of our findings strategic innovativeness should attract the greatest attention in future as it seems to play the most important role for game developers while (simultaneously) it remains nescient.
