Summary/Abstract: Communication strategies (CS), defined as devices used to compensate for deficits in the knowledge of the target language (cf. Faucette 2001), seem to be indispensable for language learners irrespective of their proficiency level, since they aid them in attaining their intended com-municative goals and may contribute to interlanguage development. For this reason, it is fully war-ranted to conduct research in this area with a view to offering guidelines for successful teaching and learning, a task that is seriously confounded, however, by the existence of two competing ap-proaches to the study of CS, namely the interactional and psycholinguistic perspectives (Nakatani and Goh 2007). The present paper provides an overview of these two approaches, discusses the main findings of the studies they have inspired, and emphasizes the need for their integration, both at the level of description, classification, research and pedagogy.
