Developing autonomy in adults learning Polish as a foreign language for business purposes

Summary/Abstract: In the past several years economic growth has encouraged many foreign companiesto move their business to Poland, which has resulted in a growing numberof foreigners living and working in our country. Some of them have decidednot only to work here, but also to learn the Polish language and culture,leading to an increased demand for courses in business Polish. The article attemptsto answer the question whether it is possible to develop learner autonomyin teaching Polish as a foreign language for business purposes. Thefirst part is devoted to a characterization of a typical learner and teacher ofPolish business language courses as well as the description of the instructionalcontext. The following part presents the advantages and drawbacks of teachinga business learner, which has a considerable impact on the developmentof autonomy. This leads to the presentation of the new roles of the learner inthe process of learning Polish as a foreign language. The last part of the paperoffers some practical guidelines on the development of autonomy amonglearners of Polish for business purposes.
