Summary/Abstract: The main idea of this discussion is focused around the social concepts of contact and contact conservation as well as the phenomena of interhuman understanding and the role of language in this process. In particular, the role of national languages beyond their geographic reach (here using the example of German) was envisaged. The question whether the acquisition of yet other languages, besides English, which has established itself in the world as a generally accepted means of communication, still makes sense, is answered by the author affirmatively. She argues that German today retains its important role as a contact language for all those who are professionally, scientifically, culturally, touristically and privately connected to countries of the German speaking world and its inhabitants, and will endeavor to maintain close contact with them.
