Summary/Abstract: The main question raised by this paper is whether or not the contractarian method in political philosophy could be so neutral between different social and economic system, as it was assumed to be in John Rawls'work. Beyond some general features of this contractarian method with are taken into consideration, it will shown that the epistemic restrictions embodied by the „veil of ignorance“ cannot prevent that the participants in the original position from making up their minds free-market-based economic system. This result is not grounded on historical evidence at all, but it is considered defensible to the extend that some classical acquisitions of social theory, as several findings of the Austrian Economic School certainly are, rank them-selves among those „general facts about society“ that the thin knowledge in the original position consists of.
