Summary/Abstract: The article takes up the problem of revealing one’s own hidden sins outside the sacramental forum in the context of love for the person in truth. First, the author provides a thorough presentation of Bl. John Duns Scotus’ reasoning concerning keeping the seal of confession. Based on arguments gained this way, as well as on the theses of St. Thomas Aquinas on the finiteness of evil and the lack of necessity of perfect cognition due to love, the author continues his reflection, leading to the conclusion that revealing one’s sins outside the sacrament of penance and reconciliation is optional. At the same time the article emphasises the value of secrecy in protecting a person’s good name, which is essential for life in society.
