Theoretical determinants of convention bureau’s activity

Summary/Abstract: Business tourism is one of the industries, which can strengthen big cities competitiveness. Because of this fact, convention bureaux are established as the institutions maximising positive effects of business tourism development. There are still not many papers considering other aspects than functional ones of convention bureaux activity, especially there is a lack of publications about theoretical background of these institutions. Therefore this paper presents theoretical determinants of convention bureaux activity based on the neoinstitutionalism. Moreover, other entities are described, which can replace convention bureau in business tourism management, according to the transaction costs theory and wide definition of institution. The results of literature research were used in analysis of convention bureaux activity in Polish cities.
