Summary/Abstract: Professor Ulrich Engel, the faithful and reliable friend of Germanic philologists in Poland, has kindly agreed, in spite of many scientific tasks he has to perform at the moment, to write a short text about the “backstage” of German Studies research and teaching he experienced in the past. The text may equally be a starting point for discussions about the meaning and role of German Studies research and teaching of today.
