Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this article is a reflection on the search for identity carried out by the female protagonists in four selected novels by Monika Maron, one of the best known writers born in former East Germany. The protagonists are well educated women who are deeply conflicted with their external world because, on the one hand, they find the totalitarian state intolerable and, on the other, after 1989 they start to withdraw from the society, motivated by a sense of alienation and despondency. The novels present a complex process of the female protagonists’ search for identity while they are confronting the characters from their real world and the imaginary one, existing only in the women’s imagination.
