Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to establish the influence value of conceptual metaphors and mental pictures (and activated conceptual structures) on the motivation of phraseological units. The author begins with an attempt of explanation of the term phraseological motivation. Due to the present research there are two research streams concerning motivation: Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory and the Figurative Language Theory by Dobrovol’ski and Piirainen. The research part of the article concerns corpus-based study of chosen phraseologisms and the explanation of their meaning within the two complementing theoretical approaches presented before.
