Summary/Abstract: According to literature discussing the link and inequalities between health and socio-economic development, there is a synergistic interrelationship between these two phenomena coupled with a double cause-and-effect mechanism. The socio-economic status and environment determines the health state of both the individuals and the society as a whole while, in exchange, health influences the socio-economic status of individuals as well as the socio-economic processes at macro level. Focusing on the latter concept, this paper aims at describing, in view of national and international literature findings, the direct impact of health state – as an independent human resource input – on economic development. It also describes the endogenous role and importance of health in growth theories and, in particular, the results regarding the regional characteristics of this topic. Finally, the paper gives an account of the regional contexts of Hungary’s economic development by presenting the properly operationalised indicators of health state which is considered as a highlighted input factor. In our view, these human resource features play a major role in the shaping of economic development of regions (districts).
