Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses the special features thatcharacterise the spatial structure of Central andEastern Europe, a region still in the phase oftransformation. This topic has already beendiscussed by numerous authors (Gorzelak 1997,Rechnitzer et al. 2008); the corresponding studieshave identified both greater and lesser developedareas, as well as other intermediate areas, leadingto various ‘geodesigns’, figures, and models. First,a brief description of the main studies of spatialstructure affecting the macroregion is given; thenour definition of the spatial structure of Centraland Eastern Europe is outlined. This is not onlybased on the main traditional developmentindicators (e.g. GDP per capita, unemploymentrate, and business density), but also considers thespatial structure layers (economy, society, concentration, settlement pattern, network, andinnovation).
