Summary/Abstract: In the first phase of the air transport development in Germany there were many air companies carrying post, passengers and cargo. From 1926 “national carrier” Lufthansa dominated the market. During all that period the air transport was subsidized by state and local authorities. After 1933 armaments were a strong incentive for the air transport development. The center of the air transport was Berlin. In the twenties there existed many lines serving short routes with local importance, including holiday resorts on the Baltic or in the Sudeten. In the thirties the number of airports in operation diminished. Konigsberg was one of the major airports in the eastern provinces, being situated en route to Moscow. Wrocław and Gliwice also belonged to the group of important airports, however Szczecin and Świnoujście lost their significance for the air transport in the 1930s.
