Summary/Abstract: Over the last years we can see a clear decline in the importance of the Polish railway transport system. It can not be noticed that a country with such a geopolitical position has one of the densest railway networks in Europe, passed in the last two decades of systemic transformation, which naturally caused, especially in the nineties, the dynamic decrease in rail transport in terms of service delivery quickly developing road transport. This resulted in Europe’s biggest stage elimination and degradation of linear infrastructure. To prevent this process must betaken radical steps that will contribute to the development of rail transport as one of the most important determinants of socio–economic development.
