Summary/Abstract: Fryderyk Skarbek (1792–1866), an economist, social activist and novelist, is known as the reformer of the prison system in the Kingdom of Poland and the founder of the Institute of the Children’s Moral Correction in Mokotów. The timelessness of his ideas and activities involves postulating a corrective function of punishment, segregation and prisons extension as well as the proposal to create a separate system of upbringing for juvenile delinquents and morally neglected children. His views, which are still a live issue, denote the need to develop an economic culture of the poor and the imprisoned as an element of the prophylactic system
