Summary/Abstract: The first care facilities for children were established in early 1914. The beginnings were very difficult,as such institutions had not been operating before that time. Associations that set them uphad to develop a curriculum by themselves, draw up daily schedules and menus. After the war, dueto a large number of orphans, orphanages were also established as the so-called closed facilities,i.e. providing round-the-clock care. There were also campaigns to provide extra meals to children, and those seriously malnourished or sick were sent to summer camps to recuperate. Campaigns to provide extra meals were also conducted in primary schools attended by Jewish children. Moreover, fundraising activities were organised to purchase shoes and clothes. Despite large involvement of the wealthy spheres in charity, assistance could not be provided to all the needy.
