Summary/Abstract: Children’s experience of world is more and more mediated by media, in particular by a new mediumwhich is Internet. It results from the fact that Internet is available at any time and at any placeand offers children interesting and inspiring forms of conveying information. Moreover, nowadayschildren perceive media as totally natural environment. Consequently, experiencing reality viamedia (Internet) replaces direct experience. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare children just atearly school age for conscientious and critical reception of Internet content and make them awareof possible threats. These tasks are realized by media education, which was developed at the endof 20th century and currently it needs reviving. This article describes various concepts of mediaeducation and its role in developing media competence of pupils. It presents determinants of earlyschoolmedia education that, preparing children to participate in media culture, should constitutethe foundation of self-learning process in the life-long learning perspective.
