Summary/Abstract: The author examines the evolution of one of the basic farce and comedy figures. The theatrical tradition, which still lived on in the interwar period thanks to the stagings of plays by Moliere and Beaumarchaise, would encourage him to engage in discussions on social relations, when servants set up trade unions, while the traditional servants were substituted for by landladies (in tenement flats), or even by waiters. As the research material, the author has chosen the comedies by Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnozrewska. The author ponders over the creations and role of servants in her plays, and examines their comedic power and the transformations of traditional models.
